Scheduled refreshes failing intermittently

Hello All,

I recently upgraded to the May 2021 version of PowerBI Report Server. I am now noticing intermittent failures on refresh schedules that were working perfectly. I've looked through the error logs, and I dont see anything regarding the errors I am receiving. Below are the errors I am getting:

I have rebooted the PowerBI server, opened the reports using Administrator, cleared the permissions on the datasources on the report, cleared my PowerBI Desktop and browser cache, deleted the report and republished it to the server with new refresh schedules and I am still getting these intermittent failures.

When opening the reports in Desktop, I get no issues ont eh refresh.

Has anyone else encounter this issue?

Any help would be great appreciated.

Is it happening with all Schedules or some specific?

Make sure that you have the right amount of space on your PBIRS Server.

This is happening to all refresh schedules with all types of connections to SQL, Progress, Sharepoint sites and Excel sheets. The wierd thing is that its intermittent. It will work one time, then it will fail twice, then work again. I'm stumped on why its happening.

Could a reboot of the SQL server that hold the Reports database be a solution?

We're experiencing something similiar on our Prod environment, after reviewing the logs it always happens with the Secondary server in our case. If your server is in a Native Mode and have Primary/Secondary, I would look into the logs to make sure if it fails hitting one server vs the other.

One more thing that you can look into is any DB maintenance jobs running. i.e. Shrinking DB Logs etc

and if you have an encrypted key for your PBIRS Configuration then try to restore it again.

One more question: When you were upgrading, have you stopped all the services before running the setup? We had faced a similar problem once as none of our jobs executing correctly, it took ages to us identify the real root cause of the issue and before any upgrade afterwards, we stop our services properly and then upgrade it and hadn't found any scheduling problems since.

I did not stop services prior to upgrade. This will be the next step I take when upgrading again. I did reboot our SQL server this weekend for some windows updates and I am getting alot less errors, but still some of the same.

I do not think it has anything to do with jobs because it happens at all times of the day. Alot of our refresh schedules happen hourly.

I greatly appreciate these responses. It is really helping me. PowerBI is a great tool, however when errors like these occur it is pretty hard to narrow it down to what is really happening.

I did restore the key directly after the upgrade, which did not help.
