Hi to all,

Where I work we are currently using the January 2020 version of PBIRS and we want to upgrade to a newer version. We have the SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance edition. I tried to upgrade following the steps described in this link (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/upgrade) using the October 2020 installation file but encountered an error in the process. Here is an extraction of the installation log file:

[32A4:5544][2020-12-28T21:23:13]i000: Setup: Install Started for package Microsoft Power BI Report Server
[530C:4A6C][2020-12-28T21:23:13]i301: Applying execute package: PBIReportServerSetup, action: Install, path: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{BC4FF963-E964-471C-BDBD-5856378D7CFD}v1.9.7627.11028\PBIReportServerSetup.msi, arguments: ' ARPSYSTEMCOMPONENT="1" MSIFASTINSTALL="7" INSTALLFOLDER="H:\Microsoft Power BI Report Server" SKU="PbirsSqlServerEeSa" CHANGEEDITION="False"'
[32A4:5544][2020-12-28T21:25:04]e000: UnexpectedError: Burn engine encountered error.

Hi Janey,

Thanks for your help. An error message popped up briefly after the step shown in the image and then proceeded to install Power BI Report Server but ultimately failed.

I'm not sure if previous version was installed using SA product key, but if I had to guess I'd probably say yes. What difference does it make if an SA product key was used when installing the previous version? Maybe the installation could have succeeded?

Best regards.

Hi Janey,

The update interface looked like this:

The update process never asked me to put the product key in. I made a backup of the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB and the virtual machine that contains the Report Server Installation, but I haven't tried to update again.

The current version works fine, but the developers that are currently working with PowerBI want the last available version.

Best regards.
