Hello Experts

My client is planning to setup PBI report server on AWS.

While reading the relatice documents, I noticed below statement from MS.

-----------------------------

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/install-report-server

To complete the initial configuration of Reporting Services, you create a report server database. A SQL Server Database server is required to complete this step.

Then

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/reporting-services/install-windows/ssrs-report-server-create-a-report-server-database?view=sql-server-ver15

SQL Server Reporting Services native mode uses two SQL Server relational databases to store report server metadata and objects. One database is used for primary storage, and the second one stores temporary data

-----------------------------

Can we use any other relational database(for example Redshift) instead of SQL Server?

In this case, will the PBI still supported by Microsoft?

Please kindly clarify.

Thanks.

My understanding is that Power BI Report Server is explicitly designed to be on premise, NOT in the cloud. Quite interesting that you want to put that on AWS - what's the reasoning for that?

Same with the database - Report server is a Microsoft solution, and I think they want you to use a Microsoft database.

Can we use any other relational database(for example Redshift) instead of SQL Server?

In this case, will the PBI still supported by Microsoft?

No you cannot. You must use a SQL Server instance.

But you as long as you run the SQL instance on the same cores that you have licensed for Report Server you should be fine. My understanding is the same as is noted in this blog post https://joeydantoni.com/2020/05/19/licensing-sql-server-power-bi-reporting-services-integration-services-and-analysis-services/ I'm sure the official docs had a note to this effect somewhere but I've just searched and cannot find it. You try could contacting your local Microsoft office, they should be able to confirm this.
