Though embarrasing, I must admit: I restarted the computer the gateway is running on a few times and the refresh can complete now... It's still taking 14 minutes to do so, compared to the 15 seconds in the desktop client so that's worrisome but I can accept this for now.

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to bookmark that troubleshooting page you linked.

I have created the same report twice; once using Power Query to transform the data and once using SQL code to transform the data. In both cases, the report is seemingly unable to finish a refresh of the data after it's been published to my workspace. I know the gateway I'm using works because I am already using with several other reports that I have authored.

In PBI Desktop a refresh of the data in either version of the report only takes 15 seconds at most

The SQL commands I wrote all resolve in less than 2 seconds individually

The largest table is 770k rows and the other six tables are less than 250k rows

5 are import, 2 are direct query

all information is coming from the same SQL database

The information is organized into a fairly simple star model

I don't know where I should begin when it comes to troubleshooting. I was hoping that recreating it with SQL code would fix it, but it didn't change anything.
