Power BI Report Server Upgrade: PowerBIReportServer.exe mscorlib System.MissingMethodException

Hello,

I am trying to do an upgrade Power BI Report Server.

As soon as I run PowerBIReportServer.exe I get a pop up window saying Microsoft Power BI Report Server has stopped working.

The full details of the error are at the end.

Hunting arpound for log files I found one in "C:\Users\myUserName\AppData\Local\Temp\PBIRS". I'm not sure if it's relevant but I also include below for information.

Anyone got any ideas as to the cause?

I fixed this by upgrading the version of .Net Framework on the server.

Retrospectively I have found that requirements for the January 2020 version of Power BI Report Server specify v4.7

This was not something mentioned on

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/upgrade

which I was using to apply the upgrade.

The server had v4.6.x.

I upgraded to v4.7.2.

The installation now completes without error

What pointed me to the version of .Net Framework as being the issue was that I tried the install on a server which had an even older version installed (4.5.x from memory).

Running the install on that produced a message to say the version was too old.

I guess for some reason the install exe could not work out the version installed on the server I was having the problem with.
