On-Premises Power BI Gateway does not appear to support TLS 1.3

Hi. The on-premises Power BI gateway does not appear to support TLS 1.3 for authentication. When trying to use a custom connector in power apps through the gateway an error occurred. Do you know when TLS 1.3 will be supported the PowerBI gateway?

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Fabric community.

TLS 1.3 is supported on the on-prem data gateway now and it was added in the June 2025 gateway release.

On the OS / .NET settings on the gateway box try to enable strong crypto so the gateway uses system default TLS which includes 1.3 on current Windows and set the two SchUseStrongCrypto registry values referenced in this link : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-communication

TLS 1.3 between gateway to Power BI or Fabric is separate from gateway on your on-prem API and if your on-prem API or any intermediary doesn’t allow TLS 1.3, the connector call can fail even though the gateway itself supports 1.3. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/overview-tls

The custom connector was able to reach the on-prem api with TLS 1.2 through the Power BI gateway. Then once the on-prem api was updated to TLS 1.3 the custom connector could no longer reach the on-prem api. Is the strong crypto mentioned the best way to maybe force the Power BI gateway to accept TLS 1.3?

Strong crypto helps but it isn’t the switch for TLS 1.3 by itself, you may need to reach out to the support for better assistance 🙂
