PowerBI data source credentials stop working

We are using PBI Embedded with incremental refresh (import) from BigQuery. We use the PBI REST API for publishing reports for several tenants, each of them having a separate dataset. To keep the whole provisioning and deployment process automated we set the data source credentials using the Update Datasource REST API endpoint. That was working for us but we recently noticed than refreshing a report started failing with the following error, which is not very descriptive as you can see:

There was an error when processing the data in the dataset.Hide details Data source error: Expression.Error: The key didn't match any rows in the table.. Key = <pii>[Name = "my-google-cloud-project-id"]</pii>. Table = <pii>#table({"Name", "Description", "Data", "Kind", "DisplayName"}, {})</pii>. ;The key didn't match any rows in the table.. The exception was raised by the IDbCommand interface.

I did some googling and only found threads about issues that don't seem related.

We discovered that calling Update Datasource again with the same credentials fixes the problem, but eventually the error would come back and would have to repeat the same to fix it. This suggest that the data source credentials could be expiring.

Is there documentation around datasource credentials expiration?
What does that error message mean?
