Time intelligence functions not working unless date filter is included

I am having issues getting the time intelligence dax funcations to work how I would expect them to. I am using the AdventureWorks tabular model and created the following simple measure. Can anyone explain to me why this returns a blank when I drag it on to the screen with no other filters? Once I add a date filter or include the date in the table it then works. How can I get this to show previous year data based on todays date?

Measure:

Internet Total Sales (PY) = CALCULATE([Internet Total Sales], PREVIOUSYEAR('Date'[Date]) )

jkinstler Wow, you are the first person to ever have an issue with DAX Time "Intelligence" functions. JK 🙂

Thanks for the response Greg. I did find those two posts before posting this. I am trying to figure out if this is how it is supose to work or if I am some how doing something wrong.

Here is a screen shot. Left as long as there is a year in grid or filter it works. on the right it doesn't work. Can I some how add a filter in the dax to have it show data based on last year by default.
