Any news when Power BI MCP server will be GA?

I have tried the modelling MCP server but would very much like to also try out the Power BI Remote MCP.
At the moment its a Preview-feature. Haven't found any info about this in the roadmap, anyone read when its likely to go GA?

Consolidation of Data from existing reports

I've created about 20 Power BI reports for 20 different customers.

Because the data provided by the 20 customers is different, or provided in different formats, each is it's own report with it's own semantic model. Each one of these reports does carry some common datasets.

I now need to consolidate all 20 into one report so that I can pull all the data into a Matrix by Customer and Product are in rows and Month & Year as well as Quarter & Year are in columns, like the individual reports.

I started by importing the semantic models one at a time into a new Power BI report. These imported fine, but it also brought in the Common data for each report as well, Like the Date table, and the Product table. I don't need these in there multiple times, just once and I can pull these in separately. I just need the base data, the customers' data, and it won't let me delete the Common tables.

How to make Power BI Slicer to show the latest forecast selected when the report loads

I have a request to show the latest Forecast selected as a default slicer when the report loads.. every 3 months new forecast will come. 2026_F1, 2026_F2, 2026_F3 like that, The slicer is a single select when the report loads the selection should be latest and the user can change the visuals will change accordingly. I use a calculated column in power bi to add a new column that will have values2026_F1, 2026_F2, Latest...... When new forecast comes 2026_F1, 2026_F2, 2026_F3, latest like that.. and i made the default selection as Latest. The user doent want to see the word latest he wants to see the forecast name instead of the workd Latest. How to do it. I know bookmarks is an option but we have so many bookmarks in that report and doesnt want to use that one .

PowerBI Workspace Not Found" Issue

Hi Team,

I am trying to deploy a thin report to a Power BI workspace using a Service Principal. However, I am receiving the error "Power BI Workspace Not Found".

The Service Principal has Admin permissions on the target workspace, and I am passing the correct workspace ID in the API request.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? Are there any additional permissions, configurations, or prerequisites that I should verify?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

pbivisuals.powerbi.com server failure

We're using PBI Embedded with some certified custom visuals including Plotly.

These custom visuals have stopped displaying recently and we've traced the problem to simple GET calls on pbivisuals.powerbi.com returning data so incredibly slowly that the visual times out.

Occasionally that server will return the requested json definition (all 38MB of it) in 150ms. But the vast majority of times it will respond at less than 10kb per second (or not at all) and the request will ultimately time out.

This is very easy to replicate in any browser by trying to access the Plotly visual definition directly:

Dataset Refresh REST API returns 415 "Model-based dataset" error

Since 2026-08-14, calling the Refresh Dataset REST API (POST /v1.0/myorg/groups/{workspaceId}/datasets/{datasetId}/refreshes) on any dataset in my tenant fails with:

HTTP 415 UnsupportedMediaType

{"error":{"code":"InvalidRequest","message":"Invalid dataset. This API can only be called on a Model-based dataset"}}

This happens even on datasets that refreshed successfully via this exact API for weeks before that date, without any changes to the dataset itself. Manual "Refresh now" via the Power BI portal UI still works fine on the same datasets — only the REST API call fails.

What I've already ruled out:

Not a client bug — reproduced identically with curl using the same bearer token, bypassing my application entirely.

Not just a POST/trigger issue — a plain GET /datasets/{id}/refreshes (listing refresh history) fails with the same error.

GET /datasets/{id} succeeds fine and returns "isRefreshable": false, even for a standard Import-mode, on-premises-gateway-connected dataset (targetStorageMode: Abf) that worked correctly before.

Not a capacity issue — my Fabric trial capacity shows Active/healthy.

Checked Service Health and Known Issues in the Admin Portal — nothing matching.

Possible trigger: the issue started the same day I added (then a few hours later removed) two unused Azure AD Application permissions (Tenant.Read.All, Tenant.ReadWrite.All) on my app registration for an unrelated experiment. It's been 3+ days since removing them and forcing a fresh sign-in, and the issue persists.

Has anyone else seen this, or does anyone know what could cause isRefreshable to flip to false tenant-wide like this? Happy to share more details (workspace/dataset IDs, full error bodies) if useful.

Power BI custom connector

I'm building a Power BI custom connector for an OData API and would appreciate some guidance from the community.

My connector currently allows users to select a table/entity and load data successfully. However, I'd like to enhance the user experience with two additional capabilities:

Filter Selection Dropdown
- Similar to the Advanced Options available in the built-in Web connector, I want to provide users with a dropdown (or similar UI control) to select predefined filter values before the data is loaded.
- Ideally, the selected value would be passed as an OData filter parameter to the API request.
- Is there a supported way to create dropdowns or dynamic parameter selection screens in a custom connector?
Back Navigation / Re-selection of Table
- After a user selects a table/entity, I'd like to provide a way for them to go back and choose a different table without having to restart the connection process.
- Is there any concept of a "Back" button or navigation flow within Power Query custom connectors?
- If not, what is the recommended approach for handling multi-step selection scenarios?

I've reviewed the custom connector documentation but haven't found clear examples covering these UI/navigation requirements.

If anyone has implemented something similar or can point me to relevant documentation, sample connectors, or best practices, I'd be very grateful.

Can we improve relationship arrow rendering in the semantic model view?

There are multiple issues with the way relationship arrows are rendered, and this image displays a few of them:

(Note: I am using the web interface, via Edge.)

Is there anything I can do to combat this confusing display pattern? An arrow that points ambigiously is worse than no arrow at all.

If anyone in power is reading: please either give us more control over how these are rendered or make them behave logically.

Example: in the first and last relationships shown above, I know that the arrow has rotated because the connecting lines are not perfectly aligned, but these lines should automatically align vertically as the others have and the arrow should only rotate if there are visible horizontal connectors extending out its sides.

Dynamic Refresh Period Per Firm - Date Slicer Shows Global Range Instead of Firm-Specific Range

Hey all,

I have a transactions dataset with multiple firms where each firm needs a different data retention period. Firm A needs 12 months of history, while Firm B needs 15 months. Users are scoped to one firm at a time via RLS.

The issue: Even though the fact table correctly loads firm-specific months from Snowflake, the date slicer shows the same global date range (15 months) for both firms.

Current Setup:

Parameters:
- RefreshPeriod = "12" (default months)
- RefreshPeriodOverrides = "FirmB:15" (firm-specific overrides)
- FirmRefreshCaseSQL = generates CASE WHEN FIRM_KEY = [FirmB] THEN -15 ELSE -12 END
- MaxRefreshPeriod = "15" (max across all firms)
Data Loading:
- Transaction fact table: Uses FirmRefreshCaseSQL in WHERE clause, correctly loads 12 months for Firm A and 15 months for Firm B
- Calendar dimension: Uses MaxRefreshPeriod, loads 15 months globally
Relationships:
- Transaction[Transaction Date] → Calendar[Transaction Date] (many-to-one, single direction)
- Transaction[FIRM_KEY] → Firm[Firm ID] (many-to-one)
Date Slicer:
- Bound to Calendar[Transaction Date]

Expected Behavior:

When Firm A is selected: slicer shows last 12 months
When Firm B is selected: slicer shows last 15 months

Actual Behavior:

Both firms show last 15 months because the calendar dimension is global and doesn't know which dates belong to which firm

What I've Tried:

✗ Setting parameter overrides at the report level - didn't propagate to semantic model
✗ Testing with measures - confirmed fact data is correct per firm, but slicer uses calendar dimension
🔄 Current approach: Adding a "Firm-Date Availability Bridge" table with distinct (FIRM_KEY, Transaction Date) combinations to enable filter propagation: Firm → Bridge → Calendar

Questions:

Is a bridge table the right approach for this scenario, or is there a simpler pattern?
Should I consider making the Date↔Transaction relationship bidirectional instead? (Concerned about RLS implications)
Are there any DAX-only solutions that don't require model changes?
Has anyone solved firm-specific date filtering without loading separate datasets per firm?

I Can't Know Who Has Access To A Report Via APIs

Hello.

I'm an admin of a Power BI environment. We need to know exactly who has access to all reports through workspace membeship, shared links and Apps.

We have all the APIs that can show who has access through workspaces and shares, but there seems to be a huge flaw when it comes to App Audiences. For example:

An App has two reports (R1 and R2) and two audiences (A1 and A2)

A1 can see R1 but not R2

A2 can see R2 but not R1.

Although we will be able to list the members of A1 and A2, we won't be able to tell which audiences they were in and therefore won't know if they have access to R1 or R2.

All the aboove means we can't know for sure who has access to R1 or to R2.

Is there an API that will provide this information that I have missed?

Iframe continues scrolling after mouse release when interacting with Power BI visuals

Hi Community,

I'm experiencing an issue with a Power BI report embedded inside an iframe.

Scenario

Power BI report is hosted within a custom web application using an iframe.
Users interact with report visuals that support scrolling (tables, matrices, slicers, etc.).
When clicking and dragging the scrollbar inside a visual, the scrolling continues even after the mouse button has been released.
It appears as though the iframe or embedded report is still capturing the drag/scroll event.

Expected Behavior

Once the mouse click is released, scrolling should stop immediately and control should return to the page normally.

Actual Behavior

Scrolling persists for a short period or remains "stuck" until the user clicks elsewhere in the report or page.

Environment

Power BI Embedded / Power BI Service in iframe
Browser: [Chrome/Edge version]
Report contains tables and matrix visuals with internal scrollbars
Custom web application hosting the iframe

Remote MCP server returns -32603 on all tools/call with Service Principal

server endpoint (https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi). This was
working correctly until approximately July 31, 2026.

Now, all tools/call requests fail with:

Was Service Principal support for the Remote MCP endpoint changed or restricted in the 7/31 update?

Can I Create or Modify Power BI Report Visuals from React?

Hello Microsoft Team,

I have integrated a Power BI Embeded report into my React application using the Powerbi-client-react package.

Currently, if I need to:

Add a new visual
Delete a visual
Change chart type
Change visual properties (colors, titles, formatting)
Modify the report layout

I must open Power BI Desktop or Power BI Service, make the changes, publish the report, and then embeded the report in React reflects those changes.

My requirement is different.

I want users (or developers) to make these report UI changes directly from the React application, without opening Power BI Desktop or Power BI Service.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to create new Power BI visuals directly from a React application using powerbi-client-react or any other Microsoft-supported SDK/API?

2. Is there any Microsoft API or SDK that allows modifying report layouts, visual formatting, or adding/removing visuals from React and saving those changes back to the Power BI report?

3. If this is not supported, what is the recommended Microsoft approach for implementing this requirement?

Power BI Embedded capacity in zombie/inconsistent ARM state — disappears from Portal, ResourceNotFou

Hi,

I have a Power BI Embedded capacity (pbiembeddedeus2) that repeatedly enters an inconsistent/zombie state. I need help to either force-delete it (so the name is released and I can recreate it) or restore it to a healthy Succeeded state, and to understand the root cause, since the problem keeps recurring.

Environment:

Subscription: WKS PRODUCTION - PT (0a75ee25-18c2-4628-b3b2-5f534f325511)
Resource Group: RG-POWERBI-EUS2
Resource: pbiembeddedeus2
Type: Microsoft.PowerBIDedicated/capacities
Region: East US 2

Symptoms (recurring over multiple days):

The capacity intermittently disappears from the Portal — the Resource Group shows as empty, no resources listed.
ARM API returns ResourceNotFound (404) when querying or trying to resume the capacity.
Portal blocks creation of a new resource with the same name: "A Power BI resource with the same name already exists in the selected location" — so the name is held, but the resource is unreachable (classic zombie/control-plane inconsistency).
az resource list returns empty across all subscriptions I have access to.
No delete operation for the capacity or the resource group appears anywhere in the Activity Log (checked the full 90-day window, scoped directly to the RG). The resource is also not present in any soft-delete list.
Resource Health shows repeated "Unavailable (Customer Initiated)" events on three consecutive days (2026-07-29, 07-30, and 07-31), which lines up with the recurring nature of the issue.

Recurrence:

2026-07-30: capacity disappeared from the Portal after a resume attempt; ARM returned ResourceNotFound.
2026-07-31 (today): the resource reappeared in the Portal but paused; attempting to start it triggered the exact same symptom again — it disappeared once more.

Correlation IDs for investigation:

Failed Resume operation: a669a1de-887c-4faa-96c7-9f63be4962af
Portal snapshot error: 38fe582f-a0cd-4f8f-8c2c-5c6a81d852fd
Role assignment delete event: 08927383-e6c6-4a47-8046-0f409beea027

Timeline:

2026-07-29 ~23:16 UTC: automationweur SP suspended the capacity (routine daily schedule — worked fine for the prior weeks).
2026-07-30 ~15:22 UTC: A Contributor role assignment scoped to the capacity, assigned to the automationweur SP (principalId fab5998f-623f-4036-a274-2839d9249a1b), was removed. This event has no caller and no claims, which suggests an automatic platform cleanup rather than a user action.
2026-07-30 ~15:23 UTC: Manual Resume attempted — failed. Resource entered the inconsistent state.
2026-07-31: Resource briefly reappeared, then disappeared again on start attempt (same symptom).

What I have already ruled out:

Wrong subscription/tenant context (confirmed correct via az account show; checked all accessible subscriptions).
Wrong Portal filters (All resources with all filters cleared).
No active Service Issue is reported against my subscription (Resource Health events API returns empty for eventType ServiceIssue), so this does not appear to be a broad regional outage.

Request: Please investigate the suspected ARM control-plane / metadata inconsistency for this capacity. Specifically:

Force-delete the orphaned resource entry so the name is released and I can recreate it, OR restore it to a healthy Succeeded state.
Since the Activity Log has no delete event, please check the internal Microsoft.PowerBIDedicated resource provider logs to identify what is driving the resource to disappear — as this has now recurred across three days, I need the root cause, not just a one-off fix.

Direct Lake on OneLake + Deployment Pipelines + Git: parameter rules deploy but semantic model refre

I’m trying to make a Fabric / Power BI semantic model deployment flow work for Dev -> Prod with Git and Deployment Pipelines, but I’m stuck on Direct Lake on OneLake source rebinding.

Setup:
I have two Fabric workspaces:
DEV workspace: TPA-BI-Hub-Dev
DEV lakehouse: lh_tpa_bi_hub

PROD workspace: TPA-BI-Hub
PROD lakehouse: lh_tpa_bi_hub

The semantic model is a Direct Lake on OneLake model. In TMDL, the source expression uses:

Tables have Direct Lake partitions, for example:

Microsoft docs say Direct Lake on OneLake does not directly support deployment pipeline data source rebinding rules, but a parameter expression can be used in the connection string.

That sounds like the service no longer classifies the parameterized expression as Direct Lake, even though the table partitions are still mode: directLake.

Questions:
1. What is the recommended Git-compatible Dev -> Prod deployment pattern for Direct Lake on OneLake semantic models?
Specifically:
2. Is parameterizing AzureStorage.DataLake(...) officially supported for semantic model refresh/reframe in the Power BI service, or only for deployment-time rule substitution?
3. Is the single URL parameter pattern expected to work with Git-integrated semantic models and Deployment Pipelines?
4. If parameter rules are unreliable here, is the recommended approach to maintain environment-specific branches, e.g.:develop has static DEV OneLake URL
main / release-prod has static PROD OneLake URL

5. Or should we migrate to Direct Lake on SQL endpoint to use deployment pipeline data source rules properly?

Best practice for Lakehouse schema migrations in Fabric Git/Deployment Pipelines?

We are building a Microsoft Fabric solution with Git integration and separate Dev/Prod workspaces. Notebooks, pipelines, semantic model, and variable libraries are source-controlled and promoted through PR/sync.

The part that feels less clear is Lakehouse table schema lifecycle.

From Microsoft docs, Lakehouse tables/data are not fully managed by Git deployment, so we currently use a setup notebook with DDL like:
CREATE SCHEMA IF NOT EXISTS bronze;
CREATE SCHEMA IF NOT EXISTS silver;
CREATE SCHEMA IF NOT EXISTS gold;

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS silver.example_table (...);

For bigger changes, for example renaming/rebuilding tables, dropping old tables, adding columns, or creating new Gold tables, we are considering a dedicated migration notebook pattern:

Best practices for Fabric Git integration with DEV and PROD

Hi Fabric Community,

I am implementing a Fabric solution with two separate workspaces:

DEV workspace connected to the develop branch
PROD workspace connected to the main branch

Changes are developed and tested in DEV, then promoted to PROD through a pull request. No direct development changes are made in production.

The main challenge is environment-specific bindings.

Both workspaces contain Lakehouses with the same names but different workspace and item IDs. Git synchronization does not always update these references automatically.

For Data Pipelines, Copy activities contain specific workspaceId and artifactId values, so a synchronized pipeline may still point to the wrong environment.

For now, I have decided to maintain separate pipelines:

DEV:
- pipeline_name_dev
- Copy destinations point to the DEV Lakehouse

PROD:
- pipeline_name
- Copy destinations point to the PROD Lakehouse

I also use separate DEV and PROD Variable Library value sets and validate the expected workspace and Lakehouse before writing data.

How do you handle this in your Fabric projects?

Do you maintain separate DEV and PROD pipelines?
Do you update bindings with REST APIs or deployment scripts?
Do you use Git integration together with Deployment Pipelines?
How do you verify that all items point to the correct environment after synchronization?

PowerBINotAuthorizedException (401) when accessing semantic model despite Read/Build permissions

Hi all,

I have a user who can see a Power BI semantic model in Get Data > Power BI Semantic Models, but when they connect, no tables are visible. If they open the semantic model in the Service, they receive:

PowerBINotAuthorizedException
Status code: 401
We already verified:

The user has a Power BI Pro licence.
The user has Read and Build permissions on the semantic model.
Permissions have been removed and re-added.
No RLS or OLS is configured.
A separate test account with the same semantic model permissions can access the model and see all tables successfully.
The test account does not have workspace access, so workspace permissions do not appear to be the issue.

Given that the test account can access the model with the same permissions, this seems to be a user-specific authorisation issue rather than a semantic model config issue.

Has anyone encountered a similar scenario or have any suggestions on what to investigate next?
