I have a PBI file whith several data sources (mainly API via web, along with some Excel files). The Desktop file works fine, but the refresh in Power BI service recently fails with the error message below.
There is a table loaded via API to a staging table, then some modifications, added columns and functions follow.
The problem seems to be a function (in turn calling the API) that gets user names and adds these as a column. When moving this step from the original query to the staging query, the error code changed and referenced the last step of the staging query (where before it was the other one).
Tried so far:
- moving steps in and out of the staging query
- checking privacy setting in Desktop and Service (all set to none)
- checking privacy options (set to ignore)
Error code:
Verarbeitungsfehler: [Unable to combine data] xxx/xxx references other queries or steps, so it may not directly access a data source. Please rebuild this data combination.

Can anyone help me on this?
Thanks

Status changed:NewtoAcceptedSimilar issue had been submited before(ICM: 282801409). It indicates that users have not configured their privacy levels correctly, or they are attempting to do something that is not supported.
Have your configured and applied gateway for this report correctly in Power BI Service?
Since you checked none privacy in Power BI Service, have you tried both Public and Organizational?
Here are some workarounds that you can try:
- Behind the scenes of the Data Privacy Firewall
- Use Fast Combine with the personal gateway
- Unable to Combine Data – Query references other queries, so it may not directly access a data source
You can also check the configuration file of gateway and make sure there is only one setting named "EnableFastCombine", and it's configured as follows:
<setting name="EnableFastCombine" serializeAs="String">
<value>False</value>
</setting>
- Please make sure restart the gateway service after the configuration file is updated.
- Please make sure use the exact gateway where the EnableFastCombine configuration is applied.

Thanks for your reply.
Besides privacy levels none I have tried also tried private and organizational (both in desktop file and service).
I don't have a personal gateway set.
And another report using the same connection is refreshing.

I tried setting privacy to 'Public', this seems to have worked.
