OneLake Catalog full-text and content search

Why is it not possible to search OneLake by item description or even content? So I was thinking about how a user can find a table if they don't know in which lakehouse it is located? Why can't you search the description to be able to only find a fabric item by its (sometimes "cryptic") name but by a description?
Use-Case: I want to have a data mesh where people can make data sets available and share them easily. So how can someone find the lakehouse where financial data is shared (when the lakehouse is called FinRep) or where to find dim_account? Is this always a case for Purview? No way that we can make that available in Fabric directly?

I know I made a Dim_Date table in a Lakehouse... But which Lakehouse was it? And what workspace?

I'd love to be able to search for tables in OneLake Catalog in Fabric.

  • Please provide the ability to search by item description, as searching by name alone is often insufficient.

We are looking into ways to facilitate sub-item search. If other are interested in this, votes would help to prioritize this.

  • This issue is well-explained by ShivekMaharaj in Fabric Community. Here's the link: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Fabric-platform/Why-leaving-Fabric-to-find-data-in-Fabric/m-p/5346177#M29761

Users should be able to search essential metadata of all items that reside in OneLake, not just what they have access to - that's the whole point of Data Mesh. Like searching for a book in an online library: you get an essence of the book before buying/ordering it.

Business users (and quite frankly financial sponsors) would rarely join these Fabric Communities and vote - but I can assure you that, if Microsoft were able to prioritize a good consumer-style data marketplace experience in Fabric, business adoption of the platform would escalate exponentially.
