Currently, folders in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI workspaces are useful for organizing content, but permissions are inherited from the workspace and cannot be managed at the folder level.
It would be valuable to allow workspace administrators to assign permissions directly to folders, enabling:
- Restricting access to specific folders within a workspace
- Separating content for different business teams without creating multiple workspaces
- Simplifying workspace management and reducing workspace proliferation
- Supporting governance and compliance requirements
- Aligning with permission models available in SharePoint and OneDrive
Example Use Case:
A Data Team workspace contains folders for Regulatory Reporting, Finance, Risk, and Development. Different user groups should only have access to their respective folders while sharing the same workspace.
Expected Outcome:
Workspace administrators can grant View/Edit/Manage permissions at the folder level, with inheritance options similar to SharePoint.
