Feature Improvement Request: Automatic Positioning for Overlapping Series Labels in Hierarchical Y-A
Description of the Issue: In Power BI reports, when using visuals like line or bar charts with a hierarchical Y-axis (e.g., categories and subcategories in the Y-axis field pane), series labels often appear missing or hidden if the starting data points overlap. This seems to occur particularly when the Y-axis label is placed at a lower hierarchy level in the field pane, leading to poor visibility and potential misinterpretation of the data.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Create a new report in Power BI Desktop or Service.
- Add a line chart or clustered bar chart visual.
- Drag a hierarchical field (e.g., a category with subcategories like "Region > City") to the Y-axis field well, placing the label at a lower hierarchy.
- Populate the visual with data where initial points overlap (e.g., similar starting values across series).
- Observe that series labels at the start of the graph are not displayed or are overlapped without automatic adjustment, making them effectively invisible.
Impact: This behavior reduces the usability of hierarchical visuals, especially in dense datasets or dashboards viewed on smaller screens. Users must manually adjust zoom levels, export data, or use workarounds like custom tooltips, which disrupts workflow efficiency and could lead to errors in data analysis for business users, analysts, and decision-makers.
Suggested Improvement: Implement automatic positioning or collision detection for series labels on the Y-axis. For example:
- When overlaps occur at starting points, dynamically offset labels (e.g., stagger them vertically or horizontally) while maintaining readability.
- Add an option in the visual formatting pane for "Auto-Position Labels" that prioritizes visibility in hierarchical setups, similar to how Excel charts handle label overlaps.
- Ensure this works seamlessly across desktop, service, and mobile views.
This enhancement would align with Power BI's focus on intuitive, self-service BI and greatly improve the experience for users dealing with complex hierarchies.
Environment Details:
- Power BI Version: [Insert your version, e.g., Desktop 2.120.XXX or Service]
- Operating System: [e.g., Windows 11]
- Visual Type: [e.g., Line Chart with Hierarchy]
Thank you for considering this request—looking forward to seeing Power BI evolve!
