Enhanced Model View: Visual Indicators for Fact & Dimension Tables
For developers working in team, rapidly understanding the structure of a Power BI data model is key. While relationship cardinality helps, complex models can still be challenging to interpret quickly.
Business Problem: Lack of explicit visual cues in the Model View to differentiate Fact tables (holding our core transactional figures and raw, aggregable numeric values) from Dimension tables (containing attributes) can slow down model comprehension, onboarding for new analysts, and communication of model structure to less technical stakeholders.
Proposed Solution: Introduce an optional feature in the Power BI Model View to visually distinguish Fact and Dimension tables. This could include:
- User-settable table property (e.g., "Table Type: Fact/Dimension/Other") that results in a distinct icon or subtle background color in the Model View.
- Automatic (but overridable) visual hints based on heuristics (e.g., tables with mostly numeric fields and many incoming "many" side relationships could be suggested as "Fact").
This enhancement would significantly improve the readability of data models, streamline model validation, and aid in quicker insights, particularly for team work that rely on clear data structures for accurate reporting and analysis.
