Dual Axis with Synchronization Functionality for Power BI Reports
Feature Description
We request the implementation of a dual axis chart feature in Power BI that allows users to combine two different measures with distinct scales and metrics on a single shared axis, enabling one measure to be visualized as a bar graph and the other as a line graph within the same visual pane, without relying on transparency effects or manual layering. Additionally, the feature should include a synchronize axis option to align the scales of both measures, ensuring consistent and comparable scaling for intuitive data analysis.
Key Requirements
- Dual Axis Support: Enable users to plot two measures (e.g., Sales and Profit) on the same chart, each with its own axis, but aligned within the same visual space.
- Mixed Mark Types: Allow independent mark types for each measure, such as rendering one measure as a bar graph and the other as a line graph, to facilitate clear comparison without visual overlap or transparency adjustments.
- Axis Synchronization: Provide a "Synchronize Axis" option to align the scales of both axes, ensuring that the bar and line visuals are proportionally scaled for accurate comparison, even when the measures have different units or ranges.
- User-Friendly Configuration: Include intuitive controls in the Power BI interface (e.g., right-click options or a settings panel) to enable/disable synchronization, adjust axis ranges, and hide secondary axis headers for a cleaner presentation.
- Flexibility: Support dynamic axis scaling based on data ranges and allow users to customize axis titles, formats, and visibility to enhance readability.
Use Case
This feature would enable analysts to create combination charts in Power BI, such as overlaying sales volume (bars) with profit margins (line) over time, making it easier to identify trends and relationships between metrics without needing separate visuals or complex workarounds. The synchronized axis ensures that both measures are visually comparable, enhancing report clarity and decision-making.
Benefits
- Improved Data Insights: Simplifies comparison of metrics with different scales in a single visual, reducing cognitive load for end-users.
- Enhanced Visual Flexibility: Eliminates the need for transparency or layering hacks, improving chart readability.
- Alignment with Industry Standards: Matches functionality available in other BI tools like Tableau, improving Power BI’s competitiveness for advanced data visualization.
Priority
High – This feature addresses a common visualization need for business analysts, enhancing Power BI’s capability to deliver clear, professional-grade reports.
