Description
As a Power BI Workspace Administrator, I understand why ownership is required to modify semantic model credentials, refresh schedules, and other sensitive configuration settings.
However, Workspace Administrators should be able to view these settings without taking ownership of the semantic model.
Today, if another team member owns a semantic model, key configuration pages are inaccessible or disabled, preventing administrators from reviewing the current setup. This creates unnecessary operational friction in environments where reports and semantic models are managed collaboratively.
Common scenarios include:
- Verifying production configurations
- Auditing refresh schedules and data source settings
- Troubleshooting refresh failures
- Ensuring governance standards are followed
- Reusing existing configurations as templates for new semantic models
- Supporting team members without disrupting ownership
Many organizations prohibit shared service accounts and require individual accountability. In those environments, the current ownership model prevents administrators from performing basic review and governance activities without taking ownership away from another user.
Requested Enhancement
Introduce a read-only administrative view for Workspace Admins that allows them to:
- View data source configuration
- View refresh schedule settings
- View gateway mappings
- View semantic model ownership details
- View credential type information (without exposing secrets)
Workspace Admins should still be restricted from modifying these settings unless they explicitly perform a Take Over operation.
Business Impact
This change would improve governance, troubleshooting, knowledge sharing, and operational support while preserving the security model that protects credentials and ownership.
