Allow Admins to Impersonate Users with Dataset Access (Without Workspace Access)
In Power BI Service, workspace admins currently cannot impersonate users who have been granted direct access to a semantic model (dataset) but do not have access to the workspace itself. This limitation makes it difficult to:
- Validate Row-Level Security (RLS) configurations for external or limited-access users.
- Troubleshoot access issues or test user-specific views of data.
- Support delegated administration and governance in large organizations.
Proposed Feature: Enable workspace admins (or users with appropriate permissions) to impersonate or simulate the experience of a user who has direct access to a dataset, even if that user does not have access to the workspace. This could be implemented as:
- A “View As User” option in the Power BI Service, similar to “View As Role” in Power BI Desktop.
- An API endpoint or admin tool that allows simulation of user access for testing purposes.
Benefits:
- Enhances security testing and validation workflows.
- Improves support and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Aligns with enterprise governance and access control needs.
