Upload a report to May 2022 Report Server
I can locally open a report on my desktop with May 2022 desktop client. However, when I upload the same report I get the following error:
An error has occurred.
There was an error uploading your .pbix file. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Hi crfallon ,
After upgrading your Report Server to the 2025 version, all your existing reports created with the May 2022 Desktop will still run normally because PBIRS supports older report formats. The only time you need to take action is when you want to edit or republish those reports in that case, you must open them using the new Power BI Desktop for Report Server 2025 and save them again. This updates the report to the new version, after which it can be uploaded without issues.

hello crfallon,
This error when uploading a .pbix file to Power BI Report Server (May 2022) is typically caused by a version mismatch between the file created in Power BI Desktop and the Report Server.
Why does this occur?
- Power BI Desktop (standard) and Power BI Desktop for Report Server have different versions.
- A file created with the standard Power BI Desktop or a newer version is not compatible with Report Server, which only accepts files created with the corresponding version of Power BI Desktop for Report Server (in this case, May 2022).
How to resolve this:
- Verify the version of Power BI Desktop used to create the file
- If you used the standard Power BI Desktop, you need to open the file with Power BI Desktop for Report Server (May 2022).
- Reopen and save the file
- Open the file in Power BI Desktop for Report Server (May 2022).
- Save it again and attempt to upload.
- Confirm the file extension and integrity
- Ensure the file is a valid .pbix and has not been corrupted or modified by another tool.

Hi crfallon,
Microosft only supports report server versions for 1 year, I recommend updating to a 2025 version of report server and power bi desktop.

There are several reports tht were developed using the May 2022 desktop client. If we were to update the report server to 2025, would theses reports still run on the server?
