Renaming Semantic Model

If I rename a published semantic model (on my workspace), will the associated paginated report still work? Or do I have to rebuild the connection, query, parameters, martices and expressions?

(I have it all built, but named it draft names, like v4. The same semantic model is used for 2 paginated reports. And now I need to give it a professional name.  Do I have to redo creating the 2 paginated reports because the source they are looking for has a different name?)

thanks

  • Hi hogank45 ,

Open the report in Report Builder and navigate to the Data Sources tab.
Update the connection string or reference to align with the renamed semantic model and test the connection.
Save the report and republish it to the workspace, ensuring the updated data source configuration is applied.
After republishing, check the Data Sources section of the paginated report in the workspace to confirm it is correctly linked to the renamed semantic model.
Use the Lineage View in the Power BI Service to audit dependencies and confirm that all reports and datasets are connected as expected.

  • hogank45 You can rename your semantic model or report any number of times on Power BI Service it will not break the connections. The connection between Semantic model and report is established based on their identifier value (Unique ID) not based on the name.

Can you please provide instructions?  I have gone to my workspace of published reports, renamed the semantic model.  Then opened the report builder paginated report and the only data source is still the old name.  So it looks like it is connected to a data source that doesnt exist anymore because there is no report with the old name in my workspace anymore. This does not seem right. Anyone checking my work is going to wonder where that data source is because according to the published workspace it doesnt exist.
