Power BI Report Server and Gateway

I am connected to On-premise data source using ODBC connection and published my report to report server. I am using VPN connection. Since my data source is local do I still need to install a Gateway for data refersh?

    The idea of Power BI Report Server is that it is on-premise.  You should not need a gateway if your Report Server can see your on-premise data sources directly. You mention VPN - how does that play into your picture?
