Template Apps - Dead?

Hey there - Power BI Template apps seem to be the only Microsoft solution for packaging Reports for cross-tenant deployment and yet:

 - When installed a Template App creates a legacy workspace that must be upgraded, and reupgraded after every update of the App

 - Cannot contain paginated reports

 - Have not received an update from Microsoft since 2022?

Are Template Apps safe to use / invest in, or will they be removed by Microsoft soon?  Does anyone have anything on this topic, will accept rumour or speculation at this point.

Thanks

James.

  • Hi JBoman-,

We sincerely appreciate your inquiry through the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

    1. Template Apps continue to be supported and remain strategically important. Although visible feature updates have been limited since 2022, Template Apps are fully supported by Microsoft and remain the primary method for cross-tenant report packaging and distribution. There are no plans for deprecation, and they continue to be prominently featured on Microsoft AppSource as well as in discussions related to the Power BI roadmap.

    2. The requirement to upgrade legacy workspaces post-installation is a known behaviour arising from compatibility design. While this step is currently manual, it can be automated by using REST API or PowerShell to enable smoother deployment.

    3. At present, Template Apps do not support paginated reports. The recommended approach is to deploy paginated reports separately and include access links within the Template App navigation.

Template Apps are expected to evolve in alignment with Microsoft Fabric. Though visible feature updates have been relatively slower, integration with Git, deployment pipelines, and Fabric-native artefacts are planned for the roadmap. Template Apps will likely benefit from these advancements within the ecosystem.

If our response is helpful, we kindly request you to mark it as the accepted solution and provide kudos. This will benefit other community members facing similar queries. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to the Microsoft Fabric community.

    Thank you.

Thanks for the reply - good to know Template Apps aren't going away.  Do you have any insights if/when Template Apps will support Paginated Reports? (It looks like at one time this was planned)?

      Thanks,

         James.
