Impactful Individualsubscription's png attachment and email image show errors
hi, how can i find the cause of this? Our pbi subcription email came with errors showing in the png attachment and email body image. When we click "Open report in Power BI", we see a properly rendered report.
Hi db042190 , That error message helps narrow it down quite a bit. The server in this case is most likely the Power BI/Fabric capacity handling the semantic model queries, not the gateway or your source database server. Even though the semantic model refreshed successfully, Power BI still has to execute DAX queries again when generating the subscription snapshot images for the email.
The fact that your second placebo subscription succeeded 20 minutes later is actually a strong indicator that this was temporary capacity/memory pressure at the time the first subscription ran, rather than a problem with the datasource, gateway or the semantic model itself. The refresh succeeding beforehand also supports that, since refresh and subscription rendering are separate workloads in Power BI.

I have seen that there have been some issues with the Power BI service and Semantic models, so it could possibly have been that the email subscription was sent out at the time of the issue. What happens if we try and rerun the subscription? Do you see the images successfully?

good question. we have a kind of a placebo subscription on the same report that we use now and then when people claim they didnt receive the report. it still runs too, with me as the only subscriber. it ran that same day 20 minutes later than the other one with no issues.

and i just noticed this in a 3rd email that day. what server are they talking about? gw or the one sm uses as a source? the semantic model refreshed fine prior. so why would dax partnered with our server play any kind of (significant) further role?

Since the report opens normally in the Power BI Service, the report itself is probably fine. The problem likely happened when Power BI was generating the subscription snapshot for the email image, not when rendering the live report. This kind of issue is often temporary. It can happen because of a short Power BI service hiccup, gateway/connectivity issue, capacity pressure or the subscription running while the semantic model was refreshing or temporarily unavailable.
Try rerunning the subscription and see if the images render correctly afterward. If it keeps happening, check the semantic model refresh history, gateway status/logs, Power BI service health and the “See details” links from the failed visuals.
