Re Gateway Connection
Hi,
I have my report connected to SAP ECC's Odata. I'm trying to understand how&where the gateway connector should be installed inorder to perform scheduled refreshes. In some of the blogs, it is mentioned to install the on-premises gateway connector which my IT team did try, but was unsuccessful. Could someone who has performed this setup for their reports are requested to enlighten on this topic. Thanks in advance!

The PC must be online in order to refresh data. It is recommended to have it turned on 24x7. If you want to turn it off then you have to make sure is on when schedule refresh is running.

The personal gateway is an app that you need to log in each time you restart the PC. It's recommended using standard for production environments.

Hi. Let's start from the installation. The on premise data gateway (i would suggest standard) must be installed in a VM or PC that has access to the data source. That means you can install it in your db engine machine or a different one with network access to the data. Here you have a most detailed information

Once the gateway is installed with a user account logged in, the configuration for the sources is built in cloud. Power Bi Service have an option in settings menú. Manage Gateways. The user logged in the gateway will be able to get in there and add sources. The sources must be configured exactly as Power Bi Desktop. Same definitions and instances. Same text string. After you add the source and test connection you can schedule refresh a report that uses that source.

In the meantime, I performed the steps you have mentioned on my PC and was succesful in connecting (atleast that's what it shows in the gateway connection settings), which raises another question, as how it is different from personal gateway. Both uses my PC and my credentials to access the data source. Also, should the PC on which the gateway is installed, should it be online always for scheduled refreshes to work ? Thanks in advance!

There are two different types of on-premises data gateways, each for a different scenario.

On-premises data gateway: Allows multiple users to connect to multiple on-premises data sources. With a single gateway installation, supports not only Power BI, but also PowerApps, Azure Logic Apps, and Microsoft Flow, which are other Microsoft cloud-based technologies; Not only the import data or scheduled refresh is supported, but also DirectQuery and Live Connection are supported with this gateway.

On-premises data gateway (personal mode): Allows one user to connect to data sources and can’t be shared with others. only supports one type of connection: Import data or schedule refresh .
2. According to this article,
Gateway machine should be always up and running to cater for data refresh queries.
a) If your Gateway machine(computer or server) was shut off, the Personal Gateway is offline or could not be reached.You will have to keep your Gateway machine(computer or server) on at all times (or locked) for schedule refresh. I suggest you could install the gateway to the Server or you don't turn off your device.
b) If you use The on-premises data gateway (personal mode), which can run only as an application. When your personal login account goes offline, the personal gateway is offline.
