Purchasing licenses

Hi all

I have put in a service ticket and spoken to a sale rep and I'm still so confused.

Our company is a google workspace but they want a BI Tool. We got a bunch of demos and decided Power BI looked the best. I signed up for the free trial and practiced some reports. Now it's time to purchase the licenses and I am stuck. Our tenant (directory) is unmanaged because we don't have any other microsoft products in use so I've been given instructions on how to do an admin takeover but I'm worried about the whole domain administrator thing. I am the business analyst and will be solely responsible for this BI tool but I am not the admin for the company's domain. In the instructions where it says to become the admin of the domain name that was already verified in the unmanaged tenant, is it saying I need to be admin of the actual domain of the company or is it refering to being the admin for the domain within microsoft.

I of course have a personal 365 subscription that I share with my company email so that I can use products like excel and then I just transfer them to sheets when I need to share but of course Power BI won't let me use my personal stuff to purchase the licenses.

  • Hi soledadb ,

The managed tenant has a global administrator assigned in Azure AD. Global administrator or Billing administrator can purchase licenses and assign them for the organization. Individuals can purchase licenses by using the self-registration feature and their work or school accounts.

According to your description, to properly manage, configure, and support Power BI, you need a managed tenant. And only system administrators can take over unmanaged tenants so that they can properly manage them on behalf of their organization.

Firstly, you should be the admin of the actual domain of the company, and then you can follow the following steps to take over unmanaged tenants.

    1, Verify the email address

2, Create a new account for administrator access

3, Verify domain ownership and become an administrator

After you become the administrator, you can purchase new subscriptions and make user assignments.

  • Hi soledadb

That does sound a bit overwhelming. But because your company uses Google Workspace, you would be the initial admin of the tenant in Power BI.

The good news is that at a later time you could make other users Admin's too, and they could then take over from you.
