Profiler trace on scale-out dataset

I'm trying to trace activity on our model that has scale-out enabled, but I believe by default SQL Profiler and DAX Studio connect to the read/write model, which of course doesn't have any query activity on it.

When I attempt to trace on the read model using ?readonly on the end of the XMLA endpoint, I get the error "The operation is not allowed by the Azure Analysis Services product as the current context is read-only".

What do I need to do to trace a scale-out model? Is it possible?

  • I think that's a limitation of the read-only replicas. You can run queries against them, but starting a Profiler trace is a different story.

Have you tried using Log Analytics to track the query activity instead? That might be a better option here since you want to see what's actually running on the read replicas, not the read/write model.
