Prep data for AI" stuck on "A refresh is in progress" for Composite models
I'm trying to use the Prep data for AI feature (Simplify the data schema / Add AI instructions) on my semantic models in the Power BI Service, but I can't get into an editable state.
When I open the dialog, one of two things happens:
- It sits on the "Hang tight - initial loading may take a few minutes" spinner and never finishes, or
- It loads but shows a banner saying "A refresh is in progress. Please close the dialog and reopen it in a few minutes. In the meantime, you can still view the previous version in a read-only state." The Apply button stays greyed out and I can't make any changes.
This happens on almost every semantic model, not just one.
Details about my setup:
- Models are Direct Lake and Import mode (over a Fabric Lakehouse/Warehouse). "Keep your Direct Lake data up to date" is currently On.
- I also have a scheduled refresh configured. In Refresh history, the Scheduled tab shows every run as Completed - no failures.
- Q&A is enabled (the Prep data for AI tabs are available, not greyed out), so this isn't the Q&A prerequisite issue.
- Capacity: [F64 / P1].
What I've tried:
- Waiting several minutes and reopening - the banner keeps coming back.
- Closing and reopening the dialog / refreshing the browser.
My questions:
- Is the "refresh in progress" banner being triggered by Direct Lake reframing, since the model keeps auto-updating from OneLake? If so, is toggling off "Keep your Direct Lake data up to date" while I edit the intended workaround, or is there a better way?
- Why would this affect nearly all my models at once - is this a capacity/SQL-endpoint issue or a known limitation of the preview feature?
- Is there a recommended way to edit Prep data for AI on a live Direct Lake model without disabling automatic updates?
Any guidance appreciated. Thanks!

Hi 4019Charan
Can you confirm where you are creating the semantic model? You have got a fabric capacity running because this uses Copilot and Copilot needs a fabric capacity in order to run successfully.

Hello GilbertQ I do have P1/ F64 Capacity attached attached to my workspace. I also mentioned this in my original message.

Hi 4019Charan,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.
Thank you @rohit1991 and @Prince0011 for the prompt response.
Thank you for the response and confirming that your workspace is on an F64/P1 capacity.
The Prep data for AI experience is currently a preview feature. Since the issue is across multiple semantic models even after the refresh history shows completed refreshes, it looks like the AI preparation metadata is not showing the refresh state correctly, this does not look like a capacity issue.
Please try the following:
- Verify that no manual or scheduled refresh is currently running for the semantic model.
- Temporarily turn off Keep your Direct Lake data up to date, wait a few minutes and then reopen Prep data for AI to see if it becomes editable.

Hello v-achippa ,
I have performed the above two steps mentioned in the comment but I still see the same error. Could you tell me what could be the possible solution?
