Missing result on cross-highlighting
I've noticed an unusual/unexpected behaviour, when using a cross-highlight visual interaction where the default result of the cross-highlighted visual is blank.
- In my report, the 'default' result (as currently calculated for June 2023) for some categories on a visual is blank. However, other months (e.g. December 2022) do have a result for these same categories.
- But when using the cross-highlight interaction for December 2022, the result is still missing/blank on the visual - so it appears incorrect. The total of the highlighted results is 22, when it should be 24 (see first image below attached).
- However, if the visual interaction is instead set to 'Filter' then the correct results do get shown (see second image below, which does show the missing 2).
This seems to me to be a bug or problem with cross-highlighting in Power BI? It isn't identified as a 'limitation' on the documentation page about visual interactions.
One solution would be to force the blank results to calculate as zero, but that is not recommended by Microsoft.
Is there a good reason why the cross-highlighting doesn't work for categories where the original result is blank? Or is there a 'proper' solution to this problem, while still using cross-highlight?
