Filtering data is sometimes incorrect in the new Dynamic Text method

I am trying to make a dynamic text to show the Net Sales Amount of the brand with the highest net sales. I was able to do this using the old method of typing text and having Power BI try and make sense of what I want. Now, with the new method with filters, I can't get it to work properly any more.

See attached Screenshot 1 to see the mismatc. For the Dynamic Text itself, I have tried setting the filter to be the top 1 Brand by Net Sales. The parameters I've set is in screenshot 2, basically making a basic Top 1 filter similar to the one I set on the Card visual. I have included the table to show the expected value. What's weird is I get the same erroneous value even if I filter directly for the highest selling brand in this specific filter set (see Screenshot 3). And actually, filtering directly by any brand does not provide the correct value.

What is going on with this? The filtering only seems to fail in the text box.

  • Hi Huey-san123,

    the editor preview (57,378,250.15) matches your table, but the text box renders 52,622,373.65 for the same filter, and Brand is ASUS gives a third number. That means the Brand filter isn’t being evaluated in the same context as your visuals. The unfiltered Total Net Sales is correct, so the problem is limited to the filter.

    Things to check:

    1. Which Brand column is it? If Brand exists in more than one table, the dynamic value filter may be using a different column or relationship path than your table visual. Use the exact same Brand field as the table.
    2. Isolate the slicer: Clear the Month slicer selection and compare again. If the numbers converge, check Edit interactions for the text box and slicer.
    3. Refresh the dynamic value: Delete and re-add the filtered value, since previews can go stale after the filter changes.

    Reliable workaround: build the logic in DAX, which is evaluated exactly like your card and table, and insert those measures into the text box. Adjust the table and column names to match your model:

    Top Brand = MAXX( TOPN( 1, VALUES( Product[Brand] ), [Net Sales] ), Product[Brand] ) Top Brand Net Sales = MAXX( TOPN( 1, VALUES( Product[Brand] ), [Net Sales] ), [Net Sales] )

    If the filtered dynamic value still disagrees with the card after step 1, it’s worth logging on the Power BI Issues forum, because the preview and rendered values differ for the same filter.

      I'm unfamiliar with the forum interface, so I might have replied incorrectly. Here is what I said elsewhere in the thread:

      Thanks for the potential solutions, unfortunately, using DAX is not something we can do, as we are building the report straight from Power BI Service, and we are just actually using one table. What I'm really finding weird is that of all the Measures in our dataset, the only one that behaves like this is the Net Sales Amount, and only in the textbox.

      I've tried items 2 and 3 in your reply and the issue persists.

  • This appears to be a filter-context issue or a bug in Power BI’s new Dynamic Text feature. Since filtering by an individual brand also returns the wrong value, the issue may be with how the text visual applies filters to the underlying measure.

    Workaround: Create a DAX measure that explicitly identifies the top-selling brand and returns its Net Sales Amount, then reference that measure in the dynamic text.

    Top Brand Sales =

    VAR TopBrand =

    TOPN(

    1,

    ALLSELECTED('Brand'[Brand]),

    [Net Sales Amount],

    DESC

    )

    RETURN

    CALCULATE(

    [Net Sales Amount],

    TopBrand

    )

    Replace the table and column names with yours. If the measure works in a Card but not in Dynamic Text, report it as a potential visual-specific issue to Microsoft.

    Hi Huey-san123

    Thank you for clarifying. Since you have already tried clearing the slicer and recreating the dynamic value, and a direct Brand filter also produces the wrong result, the issue isn’t limited to the Top 1 filter. The mismatch appears specific to how the text box evaluates Net Sales Amount, although this does not yet confirm a product defect.

    Using one table doesn’t rule out context-dependent behavior in an existing measure. If possible, have the semantic model owner review the Net Sales Amount definition for filter-context logic. This is a check of the existing measure, not a request to create new DAX.

    For now, a no-DAX workaround is to use the working Card visual alongside a static text label, retaining the required Brand filter and slicers.

    If the discrepancy remains reproducible with the same measure, Brand selection, and page filters, please raise aMicrosoft support ticket Include a sanitized reproduction, screenshots showing the editor preview and rendered text-box value against the card/table, and the reproduction steps. That evidence will help determine whether the new dynamic-value filtering needs a product fix.

    Thank you.
