Dual Mode report maintenance
Hi there,
For any dual mode reports, we are not able to download them due to the incremental refresh configuration. If we need to make further modification to the report, then do we have to make the change on the original desktop file and then republish it? All the cached imported data will be gone and the first refresh will read all the imported data one more time, is that correct?
If we anticipate a frequent update on the report file itself, is dual mode not a good option in that regards? Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi dmkblesser
If frequent updates are expected and the dataset size is manageable, consider using "import mode" instead of dual mode. Import mode allows easy downloading, editing, and republishing without triggering a full refresh.Best Regards,

Hey dmkblesser ,
I'm not sure what you mean by dual mode because the dual mode is not related to incremental refresh. Instead, it is tied to aggregation, where some tables (dimension tables) are also available in the underlying data source of the semantic model. This article is an excellent start to aggregations and the dual mode configuration: https://radacad.com/dual-storage-mode-the-most-important-configuration-for-aggregations-step-2-power-bi-aggregations
Then there is incremental refresh:
Whenever it comes to incremental refresh, I recommend the following:- Separation of the data (the pbix that builds the semantic model) from the content (the pbix that builds the data visualizations) by leveraging the concept of thin reports: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/report-separate-from-model
I also recommend changing your way of working. You must get familiar with tools like Tabular Editor (my recommendation) or the ALM toolkit. Both tools allow you to change the semantic model while keeping the existing partitions of a table alive in "incremental refresh" mode.
Hopefully, this helps to tackle your challenge.
Regards,
Tom
