Dataflow data is not updating downstream into report datasets

We recently found an issue with one of our dataflow tables not reflecting the current data in the report that it is using.

I checked all of the usual suspects in the dataflow, and everything seemed to be fine:

  • Enable Load is enabled in the dataflow table
  • Enable Load and Include in report refresh are enabled in the report query
  • The refreshes (scheduled/on demand) completed successfully for both the dataflow, the report dataset, and all of the dataflows linked to the dataflow used by the report
  • Enhance compute is Optimized for all dataflows linked to the dataflow being used by the report

This is the data shown in the dataflow:

While this is the data shown in the report, even after multiple preview refreshes on desktop or dataset refreshes on the service:

I am befuddled to say the least. Does anyone know what could be the cause or what else I can check to understand why this behavior is happening?

What happens if you remove the optimized option? Does it then refresh successfully? Just trying to troubleshoot to see if the error is with the optimization in the data flow or something else.

I set all dataflows (the linked ones, and the one feeding the reports) to Disabled optimization, refreshed the linked dataflows, the main dataflow and the report (in that order) and that seems to have fixed the issue.

However, why do I need to refresh the main dataflow when refreshing the linked dataflows it is referencing should have refreshed the contents of the linked tables and by extension, the main dataflow itself?

If dataflow is showing new data and PBI report is not showing the latest data then i would recommend try the dataflow with new PBIX file, if the new report shows the data and old report is not showing the data then the problem lies between the connection of PBI & dataflow it self.

The second option if you check all the steps applied in the power query one by one, i am sure that problem could be there ?

The last check if you did apply incremental refresh in dataflow, you need to check the settings of those, For example, if the policy only refreshes the last 7 days and you changed a record from two months ago, a successful refresh can still leave the old value in the model.
