data source server change and the gateway

server names can change over time. if a large number of reports are using a server via the gateway, how can the server name change be applied in a mass scale? SSRD data sources can be changed without having to update reports. is there similar functionality in power bi?
  • Hi rayishome,

Currently, we are not able to change data source connection string in Power BI service. We have to change it in Power BI desktop via Data Source settings or Power Query in Advanced Editor. Then republish the report to service. As the data source is changed, we need to create a new data source which use the same connection string under data gateway. Then configure the dataset to use this gateway.

rayishome I'm not certain if a servername would initiate a failure, but if it did I would imagine that the recovery key could be used if you have to re-install the gateway. This should be the exact same as if you were moving the gateway to another location. (this is purely conjecture though).

thanks... it's not the gateway, but the server the data source is connecting to.

rayishome (Wow, swing and a miss on a late night reply, apologies for mis-reading). The gateway update is easy, it's the updating all the datasets that can't be done in the Service if they came from the traditional PBIX publish route... Each file would need update and re-published...(Current state as far as I know)...

This is a great question though.. and intregues me from the Enterprise side, I'm going to dig around on this as well and see if I can find something out.
