Data source connection failed due to DMTS_OAuthTokenRefreshFailedError
Situation
Data source connection failed, and report visuals do not work as expected in Power BI Service.
Root Cause
OAuth token refresh fails intermittently on the Power BI server, causing authentication failures and preventing the data source connection from being established.
Questions
- How can I determine when this type of error is likely to occur?
- Is there a way to check or monitor OAuth token expiration in advance?
- Are there any recommended workarounds or best practices to prevent or minimize these intermittent authentication failures?
Environment
- Power BI Premium Per User (PPU)
Additional Context The issue occurs intermittently. When the authentication failure occurs, the report refresh fails and some visuals do not display data correctly. Similar credential-related refresh failures have previously been observed in Power BI Service refresh operations.

Hi v-hejinyi ,
Open your semantic model in Edit mode in Power BI Service, then go to Manage Connections and re-enter the required credentials, especially for Dataflows or Lakehouse connections. Save the changes and then try refreshing the semantic model again, either through the Notebook, Pipeline, or directly from the semantic model.

Hi v-hejinyi
I would recommend chatting with your network administrator or the person responsible for the Oauth token issue because sometimes these token expiry dates and times can be configured so if they are changed to be really low this could be affecting your issue and you might need to look at another authentication mechanism such as a service principle, workspace identity if applicable.
