Data Factory definition

Hi, as i set up a data movement (etl/elt not versioning) pipeline in fabric, i become more aware of definitions.   Am i in "data factory" when adding such a pipeline to my fabric ws or is the notion of data factory more specific to components like data flow gen2 or is data factory none of these things?

  • Yes, when you add a pipeline to a Fabric workspace you are working inside the Data Factory workload in Fabric. Data Factory in Fabric is an umbrella experience that covers several item types, mainly Data Pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, Copy Job, and (for supported sources) Mirroring. So a Data Pipeline and a Dataflow Gen2 are both Data Factory items, not separate workloads.

One thing worth calling out: Fabric Data Factory is not the same product as Azure Data Factory. They share a lot of the pipeline UI and activities, but they are different services with different capacities, licensing, and feature sets.

If this helped, a thumbs up and accepting the solution would be appreciated.
