DASHBOARD TILES SUDDENLY HAS BACK BACKGROUND

Hello, I have had a dashboard for months from several reports and everything was good until recently when the background of the tiles in the dashboard suddenly went dark, no changes was made to the theme nor was anything changed in the reports. I have checked the settings and theme and everything looks good. In the actual reports, the visuals are showing as they should but when added to this particular dashboard they have this dark background and when added to a new/blank dashboard the tiles don't have the dark background.

  • Hi y_lateefah,

    This is a known issue that Microsoft has confirmed. In this solved thread, a Microsoft employee explained the cause:

    new dashboard -> theme "None" -> uses the visual's own formatting
    any dashboard theme  -> contains a wildcard selector  * * * color = black
    new plotArea background formatting (recent release)
    -> wildcard now hits the plot area -> black chart background

    That is exactly why the same visuals look fine on a new, blank dashboard but go dark on your existing one: the old dashboard has a theme selected (Light, Dark or Custom), and the new one is still on "None".

    Microsoft said a fix was being rolled out. If you are still seeing it, these workarounds avoid the wildcard:

    1. Repin the affected visuals and choose
       "Keep current theme" instead of "Use dashboard theme"
    2. Or pin the whole report page as a live page
       (dashboard themes don't apply to live pages)
    3. Or upload a custom dashboard theme without the
       * * * wildcard (example below)

    For option 3, go to Edit > View > Theme > Custom > Upload JSON theme. The dashboard theme documentation shows the default Light theme ends with a visualStyles block that sets "*", "*", "*" color to black. A copy of Light without that line, and with the plot area set explicitly, looks like this:

    {
      "name": "Light - no wildcard",
      "foreground": "#000000",
      "background": "#EAEAEA",
      "dataColors": ["#01B8AA","#374649","#FD625E","#F2C80F",
                     "#5F6B6D","#8AD4EB","#FE9666","#A66999"],
      "tiles": { "background": "#FFFFFF", "color": "#000000" },
      "visualStyles": {
        "*": { "*": {
          "plotArea": [{
            "color": { "solid": { "color": "#FFFFFF" } },
            "transparency": 0
          }]
        }}
      }
    }

    If the tiles still render dark after the fix should have reached your tenant, I would raise a support ticket and reference the solved thread above, together with your tenant region and the date it started.

    So my overall approach would be:

    confirm the dashboard has a theme selected (not "None")
    -> repin with "Keep current theme" or pin a live page
    -> or use a custom theme without the * * * wildcard
    -> support ticket if it persists after the fix rollout

    That should get your tiles back to normal without changing anything in the reports themselves.

  • Since I've tried option 1 & 2 earlier before posting the issue on here, I went straight to try option 3 and the dashboard looks okay now. Thank you for the tip.
