Changing Data Connection Address

Our company recently changed the Snowflake server address.

The existing one will be disabled in the end of March 2024.

 

When I try to change the address in Manage Connections and Gateways, the data source path is grayed out and unable to change.

Does this mean that we need to change all of reports' sources and republish them?

 

 

Is there an easy way to change website address entirely at once?

      I know. It is a data source setting I am talking about.

      There are about 100 reports sourcing from Snowflake. I would like to know if there is a way to change all the reports' data source to be the new address.

        I don't recall a faster way to change the connection string and the connector other than dowloading the pbix file and republish it when the change has been done.

    If the data source path is grayed out in Power BI's Manage Connections and Gateways and you can't change it, it usually means that the dataset is configured in a way that doesn't allow the server address to be modified directly from the Power BI service.

     

    Here are a few steps you can consider taking to handle changes to your Snowflake server address:

     

    Power BI Desktop:
    Open the report in Power BI Desktop.
    Go to Transform Data and open the Power Query Editor.
    Update the connection string with the new Snowflake server address.
    Apply changes and save the report.

     

    to parameterize:
    If you have many reports, consider parameterizing the data source connection if you have not already done so.
    Parameters can be updated once and then all reports using these parameters will use the new Snowflake server address.


    Automatic deployment:
    For large numbers of reports, use a deployment pipeline or script to automate the update process.
    PowerShell scripts with Power BI cmdlets or the REST API can be used to download the report, change the connection string, and republish the report.


    Power BI services:
    If the report is published, you can update the dataset based on its settings in the Power BI service.
    This can be done by going to the dataset settings and finding the data source credentials, where you can edit the Snowflake server address.

     

    Data gateway:
    If you are using an on-premises data gateway, you may only need to change the connection details in the gateway configuration without updating every report.


    Republish report:
    After you update the connection details in Power BI Desktop, you need to republish the report to the Power BI service.

     

    There is no single "change once" feature in the Power BI service to update the server address for all reports. If you have a large number of reports, I recommend automating them using PowerShell or a REST API to streamline the process.
