Can't Connect to SQL Server - On Prem Gateway

So, I've installed an Enterprise On-Prem Data Gateway to a SQL server and successfully connected to PowerBI. When I go into "manage gateways" the connection says good to go and the SQL data source also says connection successful. However, when I change the data source in my report, it cannot find the SQL server. I've checked to make sure everything matches correctly multiple times and it does, I just cant seem to get it to connect. Any suggestions?

  • Can you confirm you did the following

    1. Power BI Service > Manage Gateways > Select your gateway > Gateway Cluster settings tab > you see the message "Online:You are good to go"

    2. Power BI Service > Manage Gateways > Select your gateway > Select your data source (the SQL Server in your case) > Data source settings tab > you see the message "Connection successful"

    3. Open Power BI desktop > get data > SQL Server > connect to SQL server and get some data (or make sure your current report connects to the SQL Server from the desktop). I would use a new report just to check if it is working.

    4. Create some tables and visuals and publish it to Power BI Service.

    5. Power BI Service > Got to workspace where the report was published > dataset of the report > More (the three dots) > Scheduled refresh > Gateway connection and see if you can see the gateway. You should be able to select the gateway. It will take a while (about 15 seconds) to connect sometimes.

Let me know how it goes.
