App owns the data - capacity required?
Hello, I'm looking for some words of wisdom from those with more experience than I...
I've been using Power BI for a number of years but only very recently in an embedded capacity. I managed to overcome a number of issues (all of my own making) and now have reports showing in a web browser via a Visual Studio solution which is deployed to Azure.
All good I thought until I clicked the URL and spotted the message "This is a free trial version, to remove this label a capacity must be purchased".
I'm an MS Partner and was using the free version of Power BI until recently when I started the 60 day trial of Power BI Pro. I'm happy to pay for this, even the Power BI Premium ($27.50 per user per month at the time of writing this). But the Per Capacity price of $6,858.10 per month would have me needing a visit to my doctor to see if I could fund the purchase by selling an organ!
Before I commit to any type of license, can anyone help me to understand what I actually need to purchase in order to be able to embed reports in an 'app owns the data' configuration? I'm only looking to publish a few reports and they aren't exactly massive so $7k per month just isn't worth it. I could recruit a full time BA to do the work for less than that. I don't want the end user to need a Power BI license, I just want them to be able to navigate to the URL and interact with the report.

It is the only way to share with outsiders without buying them a Power BI Pro license and inviting them into your AD as a guest, or without sharing the report as a public URL, which you definitely do not want to do. There are bots scanning for those URLs and they are not secure by design.
Note that a "premium" license that allows this is the Premium Capacity, so the A or P skus. The Premium per User does not allow this. It is per user, not per capacity/company.

Power BI embedded capacity starts much much cheaper than that. See Pricing - Power BI Embedded | Microsoft Azure
The lowest level A-SKU (A skus are for embedded reporting only) starts at about $1/hr, or about $720/mo.Wow that's still really expensive for what I'm trying to achieve. I was hoping that I would be able to buy a Power BI Premium license and it would allow me to share the reports without having to run to that level of expense. I'm not being paid anything for providing the access to the analysis so can't consider this.
It sounds like I may have to consider a non Microsoft application if this is the only way of doing it with Power BI.- edhans
