Access Synapse (Private Endpoint Enabled) from Microsoft Fabric

Hi everyone,

I have a Synapse workspace that is secured using private endpoints (no public access enabled). I’m currently working on integrating this setup with Microsoft Fabric and wanted to understand the supported connectivity options.

My setup:

  • Azure Synapse workspace with private endpoint enabled
  • Public network access is disabled
  • Data resides in Synapse SQL (serverless)
  • Microsoft Fabric workspace (Lakehouse, Dataflows, etc.)

My requirement:

I want to access/query data from Synapse within Fabric (e.g., via Dataflow Gen2, Notebook, or Lakehouse).

My questions:

  1. Is it possible for Fabric to directly connect to Synapse private endpoint?
  2. Does Fabric support private networking / VNet integration for accessing such resources?
  3. Is On-Prem Data Gateway the only supported approach for this scenario?
  4. Alternatively, is the recommended pattern to:
    • Export data from Synapse to ADLS
    • Then access it in Fabric (via shortcut or ingestion)?
  5. Are there any best practices or roadmap features (e.g., managed private endpoints in Fabric) that could simplify this?

I’m trying to design a secure and scalable architecture without exposing Synapse publicly.

Any guidance or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
I am doing this POC- i have F2 and F4 capacity

What you need to do is create a Virtual Network Gateway. You will see it in the same area as yor on-premises gateway but in a different tab.  These are created in Azure though.

Something to consider is that you might then have difficulty mixing on-prem and cloud data with this approach, so you might have to use other Fabric objects to either copy or shortcut to that Azure data.  Otherwise you'll need to use the on-prem gateway to connect to both and do the mixing.

  • Fabric cannot reach a synapse private endpoint, and dataflow gen2 and lakehouse use only public endpoints, and the paths that work are a data gateway or landing the data in adls for fabric to read.
