  • Hi 703333668,

    What is your data source?

If you select DirectQuery when making the connection, for example with a SQL Server database as shown below, Power BI will use a direct query connection and not cache the data.

I am using MySQL Database not SQL Server. Can you please suggest using MySQL how to connect with "Direct Query" Mode.

        Hi 703333668,

When creating the connection, it is the same screen where you can select Import or DIrectQuery connectivity modes.

Can you share a screenshot of your connection setup?

    Hi 703333668,

The important detail here is that you are using MySQL rather than SQL Server.

Microsoft's current MySQL connector documentation lists the supported capability as Import only.

DirectQuery is not currently listed as a supported capability for the native MySQL connector.

Microsoft also explains in the DirectQuery documentation that the connector's Capabilities supported section should be used to determine whether DirectQuery is available. If DirectQuery is not listed there, that connector does not support DirectQuery.

So the SQL Server connection screen shown earlier is slightly different from your case. SQL Server supports both Import and DirectQuery, while the current MySQL connector does not.

This is also why I would not expect selecting or entering a native SQL query against MySQL to give you a true DirectQuery model. The MySQL connector supports native SQL statements, but still under Import mode.

The generic ODBC connector would not solve this either because Microsoft's current ODBC connector documentation also lists Import only.

If you need to stay directly on MySQL, I would use Import mode and configure the refresh frequency according to your freshness requirement.

If you specifically need near-real-time querying without importing the MySQL data into the semantic model, another architecture would be to ingest or replicate the MySQL data into a source that Power BI supports for DirectQuery, or into Fabric Lakehouse/Warehouse and then use an appropriate Fabric semantic-model mode such as Direct Lake.

So I would not spend more time trying to force the native MySQL connector into DirectQuery mode because the current Microsoft documentation does not list that as supported.

      Hi ShivekMaharaj,

I don't believe that is correct. When I create a MySQL connection in Power BI Desktop, there is a DirectQuery option:

Direct Query mode option is there in MySQL connection. But the problem is after selecting Direct Query if you try to choose any Table or View or Select Query then it will throws an error saying that Direct Query is not supported. But SQL Server both modes are working properly
