Cannot Set Custom Query on "new" Power Query

Hi,

Following latest September 2026 Power BI Update, I'm not able to edit a native database query on Power Query, the option has vanished.

The query is still showing in the m-query editor, and I'm getting the data with the native query. But the option to add/edit the query from the option menu has vanished.

How it used to display, and how it's on the Power Query documentation. Import data from a database using native database query - Power Query | Microsoft Learn

Thank you in advance for your support!

    Hi Anonymous ,

MSFT just answered  message about this an there was a new version of Power BI Desktop pushed yesterday evening (7 October 2026)  that address this and other Native Query related issues.

Please download this new version, if the problem persist let me know so I can reach out to the MSFT team once again.

    Regards

  • Hi Anonymous ,

This is a know issue on the new Power Query Experience and MSFT is working on solving it.

To overcome this you can do one of two options:

    • Turn off the new query experience in the preview features
    • Use the advance editor to change the syntax of your query

Please see a similar question where I give a full detail on that change of the advance editor.

      Olá Miguel,

Thank you for the quick reply and for the feedback.

I'll be using your tip of adding the sql expression as an extra step, previous to the SQL Connection.

      Obrigado,

      Eduardo

  • The issue is still reproducible in Power BI Desktop 2.159.883.0 (October 2026).

With the new Power Query experience enabled, the gear icon for editing an existing native SQL query disappears from the Source step.

Disabling the new Power Query experience under Preview features and restarting Power BI Desktop restores the gear icon and allows the SQL statement to be edited again.

We reproduced the issue on two different users/machines.
