We couldn't authenticate with the credentials provided - SQL Server where access is just fine

I have a SSMS connection to a SQL server that's working fine with SQL Server Authentication but I'm getting the 'We couldn't authenticate with the credentials provided' exception when trying to connect with Power BI Desktop and Database login.

I'm 100% sure I'm entering the exact same Database Server, Name, User and Password.

I've tried both w. the Microsoft Store Desktop app and the downloaded Power BI Desktop app just to check if there is a difference.

Anyone have any ideas? Much appreciated!!

Found the solution, the connection from Power BI is working when entering the IP Address instead of the SQL Server Name

  • Inn Power BI, go to SQL connection → Advanced options → tick Trust Server Certificate, or clear cached credentials from Data Source Settings and reconnect using SQL Server Authentication. Also make sure the login has access to the selected database, not just master.

      Hello Bhavin,

Thanks for looking into the question. Can you specify where you to get to these SQL Connection → Advanced Options?

I can't find them via Source or Data Source Settings

  • Hi Femke

Can you try to add Database name in the Database(optional) area in power bi and see if it works ?
