Tooltip on horizontally scrolling table columns header not working

I am trying to implement tooltips on the column headers of a horizontally scrolling table/matrix in Power BI, but the common transparent button and grouping method is not working as expected. When I scroll the table horizontally, the transparent buttons acting as the tooltip triggers do not move with the corresponding column headers.

My Goal:
To have custom tooltips appear when a user hovers over the header of each column in a table that can be scrolled horizontally.
i have tried all the available workarounds and couldn't even find an appropriate visual on appsource.

  • Hi sangeetas

Tooltips on the header themselves are not currently supported. I don't think such a  custom visual exist. You might be able to do this with matrix viz in Tabular format up to some extent.

  • Currently, Power BI does not natively support tooltips on column headers in tables/matrices with horizontal scrolling. The common workaround using transparent buttons grouped over headers doesn’t work well because the buttons don’t move with the headers during scroll.

    Resolution:

    • Unfortunately, this limitation cannot be fully resolved with built-in visuals or overlays due to the way Power BI handles scrolling and layering.

    • Consider alternative approaches such as providing tooltips inside cells or using a separate legend or explanatory panel outside the table.

    • Explore custom visuals from the marketplace but note that most also lack this header tooltip sync feature.

    • Provide feedback to Microsoft requesting enhanced tooltip support on matrix headers.

    Hi sangeetas ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

Thank you danextian for the prompt response.

Power BI doesnot currently support tooltips on matrix/table headers - only on data cells. That’s why transparent button tricks don’t scroll with the header.

As an alternatives, you can try:

Use the Description property of fields (shows up as tooltips in model view and service).Use report page tooltips on cell values (but not headers).Provide a separate help/definitions table or pop-up for column info. So, true header tooltips aren’t possible today, but you can use descriptions or supporting visuals as workarounds.
