Tool Tips a Little Broken?

Is it just me, or are Tool Tips for plots a little broken?

For example, I figured out that one can author a measure to load as a dynamic tool tip message, but this just gets added like another series is being plotted.

Things get even worse if you are plotting more than one series and the series are dynamic as well based on slicer selections.

What I don't really understand is why Series names can only be hard coded? All this confusion could be avoided if the series name could be loaded in as a measure. I am glad that we can at least type over the Measure name, but that is such a cheap hack.

How did we even get here? This is a sorry state of affairs when Excel charts have been completely dynamic since at least last century!

It's not entirely clear what specific issue you're facing, but you're right that default tooltips in Power BI have some limitations. However, many of these can be addressed by creating custom tooltip pages, which provide much greater flexibility.

You might find this guide helpful:
How to Create Custom Tooltips in Power BI

If this doesn't fully resolve your issue, could you provide more details or an example of what you're trying to achieve but can't? That would help in understanding the exact limitation you're encountering.

Also, if you have concrete improvement ideas (e.g., dynamic series names in tooltips), you might want to check if there's an existing feature request on the Power BI Ideas forum.

Ritaf1983 Thank you for the YT link. I just watched it, and I did not know that feature even existed. And thinking through my business requirements, I believe I can create a custom Tool Tip page that achieves what I need. This will also help quite a bit in incorporating custom formatting as well that auto tool tips don't support.

And I guess that is really the problem that I am describing: Auto Tool Tips are quite limited. If you want something custom, dynamic, etc. then you will have to author your own. I just didn't know that was possible until now.

      So, thank you!

  • Hi WishAskedSooner

I’ve seen the same issue lately, especially with longer tooltips or ones using DAX expressions. They work fine in some visuals but get cut off or show formatting issues in others.

Might be a regression in the recent build. Worth logging through the Feedback Hub or Ideas forum if it continues.
