Struggling with "Something went wrong"

I'm really struggling with the "Something went wrong" message. Since the June 2025 update, every time I open a PBIX file in Power BI Desktop, the message appears, making it nearly impossible to work. I'm using an Analysis Services live connection, and I suspect this message is caused by the connection dropping repeatedly. How can I fix this? Please help 😞

  • Hi Vesper ,

Sorry to hear you’re running into this issue after the June 2025 update. The "Something went wrong" error in Power BI Desktop, especially with an Analysis Services live connection, can be quite disruptive. Here are a few targeted steps to help troubleshoot and (hopefully) resolve the problem:

    1. Check Analysis Services Connection Stability:
If your live connection is dropping, Power BI will frequently throw errors. Make sure your network is stable and the Analysis Services server is not overloaded or restarting. Try connecting to the same model from another client (e.g., Excel) to see if the issue persists.

    2. Roll Back to a Previous Version:
If the problem only started after the June 2025 update, consider temporarily rolling back to the previous Power BI Desktop version. This can help confirm if the issue is related to the update itself.

    3. Update .NET Framework and Drivers:
Ensure that your .NET Framework and any SQL/Analysis Services client libraries on your machine are up to date, as compatibility issues can cause connection drops after a major update.

    4. Clear Power BI Desktop Cache:
Corrupted cache files can trigger errors after an update. Try clearing the Power BI Desktop cache:
File > Options and Settings > Options > Data Load > Clear cache.

    5. Review Firewall and Proxy Settings:
Check if any new network security rules or proxy changes were implemented recently. Power BI Desktop needs stable access to the Analysis Services server.

    6. Check for Known Issues:
Sometimes, new Power BI Desktop releases introduce bugs. Check the Power BI Community forums and Microsoft’s Known Issues page for any reported problems with live connections after the June 2025 update.

    7. Collect Logs for Support:
If none of the above help, reproduce the issue and collect logs (from "Options > Diagnostics > Enable tracing") and raise a ticket with Microsoft Support. Attach the logs and highlight that the issue started after the June 2025 update with Analysis Services live connections.

Let us know which steps you try and if you find a workaround! This info can also help others facing similar issues.

Thank you for providing the solution. I rolled back to the "Nov. 2024 update" as mentioned in #2, and it resolved the issue. I'm truly grateful. For those who are facing the same problem, I recommend rolling back to the previous version. 🙂
