Slicer bug in Modern Visual Defaults
“Modern Visual Defaults” for some Visuals are not applied correctly. For the “Slicer,” “Button Slicer,” and “New Card” Visuals, the Theme default settings for Shadow, Visual border, and Background are not applied correctly.
Ignoring Visual Border and Background is likely intentional, but this cannot be combined with theme-based Shadow settings. I believe that if a visual element is to use the theme default, all three settings (Background, Visual Border, and Shadow) must be applied, or all three should be ignored.
Currently, if Shadow (along with Background and Visual border) is used in the theme, only Shadow is applied to these visuals (which looks very ugly).
Please test this by setting the Fuent 2 base theme, enabling Shadows in the theme’s visual properties, and then adding Sicer to the canvas.
Do you have the same problem?
Hi josef78 ,
Thank you for reaching out to fabric community.
This is a limitation/inconsistency with the current Modern Visual Defaults for the Slicer, Button Slicer and New Card visuals. As a workaround, manually configure Background, Border, and Shadow for these visuals, or remove Shadow from the theme. There is currently no separate theme setting that forces all three properties to be inherited together. Microsoft documents these as separate formatting properties under the visual defaults.

Hi josef78,
I think your observation is valid, especially because the same behavior has now been reproduced by others in the thread.
One workaround I would consider, particularly if this affects a larger report, is using a custom theme JSON rather than manually formatting every Slicer, Button Slicer and Card individually.
Microsoft’s custom report theme documentation allows visual-specific defaults to be defined through the visualStyles section.
That means you can target a specific visual type and explicitly set the formatting properties you want, instead of relying only on the broader Modern Visual Defaults inherited from Fluent 2.
Microsoft’s Visual Defaults documentation also confirms that Background, Border and Shadow are separate visual properties in the theme model.
So if Modern Visual Defaults are currently applying Shadow while not applying the corresponding Background/Border defaults consistently to these visuals, a visual-specific JSON theme may be a cleaner workaround than fixing every visual manually.
I would still treat this as a current inconsistency rather than a confirmed product bug until Microsoft publishes it as a known issue, but the behavior does not look consistent with the intended theme inheritance model.
If you are already using an organizational/custom theme, I would also export it and inspect the visualStyles section. That should make it easier to test whether explicitly defining these properties for the affected visual types gives you consistent rendering.

Thanks for the advice. I know how to do it manually, but slicers are used very often, and manually configuring each one is very time-consuming.
However, the situation has improved with the October release, the new Text and List slicers now work correctly (they have a background). Only the Button Slicer and the old Slicer still apply the style incorrectly.

Hi josef78 - The Fluent 2 base theme and enabled Shadow in the theme’s visual properties. When I added a Slicer to the canvas, the Shadow was applied, but the Background and Visual Border settings were not applied. So, the visual ends up with a shadow without the other theme styling, which makes the appearance inconsistent. It looks like an issue with how the Modern Visual Defaults are being applied to these visuals.
Hope this helps. - v-sathmakuri
