If you refresh the dataset and report, which overwrites the old dataset and report. We can not trace the history of data and report changed. Your solution is practicable.
In addition, I don't know more derails about your report. In Power BI service, there is a Usage Metrics report which measure and magnify your impact with dashboard and report, I am not sure if it us useful for you.
