Power BI Features/ Workarounds
Hi all! I was wondering how to copy a tab from one Power BI downloaded file (.pbix) to another Power BI (.pbix) file. I want every measure/query/tables/visualizations/data/etc included in that tab to transfer over to the new file and include all the visuals/filters in the exact same place as that tab. I know we can do this manually but it is time consuming and prone to error. I am hoping for it to be fast and was wondering if this is a feature we haven’t discovered how to do. Image visualization we can use ctrl+A, ctrl+C, and ctrl+v but it doesn’t include everything else such as the measures and other info associated or added with that tab. If anyone knows how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated and if there are workarounds, please let me know. Thank you all!!

Hi Microsoft_User ,
Apologies to everyone by steping in this post but believe that everyone is over complicating this with AI and the manual copy+paste. This is a complex question if you are new to the multi-user development but the solution is already defined some time ago using the project format.
Currently and as Murtaza_Ghafoor said you should use PBIP to make this integration, "copy" and allow for several user to have their changes in the model to be done in a integrated way, this works with the CI/CD of GitHub or DevOps.

This will allow to have several users working on the same project, some of the things you may need to take into account is:
- Create several branches for each user
- Be careful when merging the branches specially if you have different users changing the same tables or pages you may need to select which changes to keep or to merge both of them
You need to understand some basic concepts of git but this is possible to do by setting the correct process and without having the need to spend additional money in tokens or doing something manually that will take a lot of time and effort specially when refereeing to the copy+paste, or doing the correct prompts in AI.

There is no direct way to do that, however there are altenate ways to do that, what i normally do that i would open the same file and save it with desired name and do the required changes so you would have exact copy of the report.Possible solutions
- Use Power BI Project (.PBIP) — best for repeatable development
If both reports can be converted to PBIP, you can work with the report/model definitions as files rather than treating the PBIX as one packaged file. This makes it much easier to move or manage report pages, visuals, measures, and model metadata.
However, you still need to handle dependencies carefully when the destination model is different.
- Use Tabular Editor for model objects
If the main problem is transferring measures, calculation groups, relationships, perspectives, etc., Tabular Editor can help copy model metadata between semantic models.
You can then copy the report page/visuals separately.
This is particularly useful when the source and destination models have the same or very similar schemas.
- Use ALM Toolkit
If the two PBIX files represent different versions of essentially the same model, ALM Toolkit can compare and deploy model metadata between semantic models.
This is useful for synchronizing:
- Measures
- Tables
- Columns
- Relationships
- Calculation groups
- Perspectives
- Other semantic-model metadata
It doesn't directly solve the complete “copy one report page including everything” problem, but it can solve the model dependency portion.
- Copy the page/visuals separately
For the actual report page, Power BI's copy/paste functionality can move the visuals and their formatting between reports.
But there is an important limitation: the destination report must already have the required fields/measures/model objects available. Otherwise visuals may become broken or require remapping.

You can use the TMDL view to copy the model objects, including tables, columns, measures, relationships, calculation groups, perspectives, roles, partitions, and other model metadata, from one PBIX file to another. Then, in the original PBIX, select all the visuals on the page, copy them, and paste them into the new PBIX. This should preserve the visual layout and formatting while the TMDL handles the underlying model objects.

Hi Microsoft_User,
You can simple copy the script using TMDL view and paste in new .pbix file, without losing any measure, simple drag the table and copy the whole script in one go, refer screenshot, and then you can resize the canvas in your new .pbix file as per the old .pbix dimensions and copy paste the visuals. in below view i've pulled in the Tables and it gave me script for all the tables, including all the columns and the meaures which are in those tables.

I am wondering if we have multiple people working on the same template and we all make our own tab. Is there a quick way we can just put our tab into the master Power BI file. Everything we do on the file we can’t forget, like measures, dax queries, table modifications, links, columns, etc but also the way our data page is organized by visuals and filters.

Hi Microsoft_User,
Currently power bi does not support copying an entire report page together with all its queries, tables and measures into another PBIX file. Copy and paste transfers only the visuals and the same model objects must already exist in the destination report.
If you need an exact copy, the simplest solution is to use Save As on the original PBIX file and remove the pages and model objects you don’t need.

Thank you all. Would you happen to know other possibilities to try. When we do save as, other people’s tabs wouldn’t be on there as we have our own copy making our own tab. We have multiple people using the same data but it is constantly updating. Then we have to manually download the master file, take what we did on our file and replicate it to the master file and update ours. That means only one person can be working on the file.
I tried converting it to pbip file and it didn’t work. It crashed when I copy and pasted the tab I identified I worked on into the .json script.

Do you have Claude Code? If you have Claude Code , Maybe try to convert your file into PBIP, connect Power BI to Claude Code, and ask it to copy everything to the new PBIP file page?

I ran building a full Superstore dashboard through the Power BI Modeling MCP server in Claude Desktop. Two things fixed it for me:
- Keep Power BI Desktop open with the file saved as .pbip before you prompt.
- Ask Claude to report row count, total Sales and total Profit after each step, so you can check it did what you asked.
I recorded the full build with all 4 prompts if it helps:
