Power BI Dekstop Issue
Dear Team,
I'm unable to launch Power BI Desktop on my Windows 10 laptop. Power BI appears in Task Manager as a running process, but the application window never opens.
I have already updated Windows 10 to version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.6466), restarted the laptop multiple times, reinstalled Power BI Desktop from Microsoft's official website, and confirmed that Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is already installed.
I also checked Event Viewer and found an event related to PBIDesktop.exe. Could you please advise whether you have encountered this issue before or whether there is another way to troubleshoot Power BI Desktop startup.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi 14I_Dutta
I have faced the issue of populating error message and immediately Desktop application closes
Can you completely uninstall Desktop application and also remove default folder created in C drive and freshly you can install which has worked for me when I stuck with similar issue

Hi 14I_Dutta,
I’d try a few things before reinstalling again, because if PBIDesktop.exe is visible in Task Manager but no window appears, the issue can be related to the local Power BI user profile, cached settings, or the graphics/WebView2 components.
First, completely close Power BI Desktop from Task Manager, then try launching it as Administrator. If it still stays in the background, check whether there is a Power BI process running under another Windows session/user.
The next thing I would try is resetting the Power BI Desktop local cache/profile. With Power BI completely closed, rename the Power BI folders under:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop
For example, rename the folder to "Power BI Desktop.old" rather than deleting it. Then launch Power BI again. This forces Desktop to recreate its local configuration and cache.
I would also check the Event Viewer entry you mentioned and look specifically at the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and Exception code. Those details can usually tell us whether this is a Power BI issue, a graphics driver problem, WebView2, or a Windows dependency.
Since you're on Windows 10 22H2, I'd also make sure you're using the current supported Power BI Desktop version and that Windows is fully patched. If the issue started immediately after a Power BI update, testing the previous Power BI Desktop version can also help confirm whether it's version-specific.
One other useful test is to create a new Windows user profile and launch Power BI there. If it opens normally, that strongly points to something corrupted in the original Windows user profile rather than the Power BI installation itself.

Hi 14I_Dutta,
Since reinstalling Power BI Desktop has already made no difference, there is one Microsoft-documented WebView2 startup test I would try before reinstalling anything else.
Microsoft's Power BI Desktop startup troubleshooting guidance notes that security software can sometimes interfere with WebView2 during startup.
With Power BI Desktop completely closed, go to System Properties > Environment Variables and create this User variable:
WEBVIEW2_ADDITIONAL_BROWSER_ARGUMENTSwith the value:
--disable-features=RendererCodeIntegrityThen launch Power BI Desktop again.
This is only a diagnostic test, so Microsoft recommends removing the environment variable afterward. If Desktop opens successfully with it in place, I would involve your IT team and investigate antivirus/security software interfering with WebView2 rather than reinstalling Power BI again.
If it still does not open, the same Microsoft guidance gives the locations of the WebView2 Crashpad reports and recommends capturing the CodeIntegrity > Operational and Windows Application Event logs. Since you already have an Event Viewer entry, those details would be much more useful for narrowing down the failing component.
Your Windows 10 version itself is still within Power BI Desktop's documented minimum OS requirements, so I would focus on the startup failure rather than the OS version first.

Running in Task Manager but no window usually means it's a display issue, not a crash.
Try this:
Window might be opening off-screen, especially after a resolution/monitor change. Click the taskbar icon, right click it, select Move, then press an arrow key followed by moving your mouse, this often pulls it back into view.
Delete the cache folder. Close Power BI fully via Task Manager, then clear everything in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\Cache, corrupted cache can cause silent hangs like this.
Check graphics driver, outdated ones can cause the window to fail rendering even though the process runs fine. Update and retry.

Close Power BI from
Task Manager → restart your laptop → rename the Power BI folder in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\ → open Power BI as Administrator - 14I_DuttaNew Member
