New Release

Hello all,

I have installed the new version, why I still see the old one?

  • Hi PanosDi71,

After installing the newer version have you closed all .pbix files and restarted your Power BI instance?

if  not try reopening the version by closing all files and kill Power BI session from Task manager as well, now check if you see the latest version again. if it still doesn't work.

Most likely, you have two Power BI Desktop installations (e.g., Microsoft Store + standalone installer), and Windows is opening the older one.

    Quick check:

    1. Open Power BI → File → About and note the version.
    2. Open Task Manager → Details.
    3. Find PBIDesktop.exe → Right-click → Open file location.
    4. Check whether that path belongs to the old installation.
    5. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for multiple Power BI Desktop entries.

Finlay, remove all the versions from your PC and reinstall the latest version.

    Hi PanosDi71,

One thing I would check before reinstalling again is whether the version you are opening is actually the standard Power BI Desktop or Power BI Desktop for Report Server.

Microsoft treats Power BI Desktop for Report Server as a separate application, and it can be installed side-by-side with the normal Power BI Desktop.

If both are installed, the version that opens when you double-click a PBIX can also depend on which one was installed most recently.

    I would check:

    1. Open Power BI Desktop.
    2. Go to Help -> About.
    3. Note the full Version number and whether the application says Power BI Desktop or Power BI Desktop for Report Server.
    4. Open Task Manager -> Details.
    5. Right-click PBIDesktop.exe -> Open file location.

Microsoft’s Power BI Desktop installation guidance also confirms that the current version can be checked under Help -> About.

If the About version is still the old build, I would then check which installation path you are launching rather than assuming the update itself failed.

Also note that the Microsoft Store version updates automatically, while a manually installed executable needs to be updated manually.

If you can share the version shown under Help -> About, it should be possible to tell immediately which build you are actually running.
