Migrating PowerBI from one server to another

HI All,

We have recently moved to google cloud and hence we have moved our MySQL database as well and also the server where we hosted PowerBI gateway. I need help with two things

1. I have a lot of reports and usually when I change the IP of the data source I have to refresh ( apply changes) all the tables before I can publish the report with updated IPs. Doing this for all the reports is very cumbersome plus it takes  a lot of time since I have all my reports on a desktop machine and it takes a long time to update all the tables. I want to know if there is an easier way to change the IPs for all the reports.

2.  How do I set up the gateway on a new server?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • 1. If you set up a domain name linked to an IP, by setting a DNS record in your DNS-management, you only will need to change the IP address linked to that name once whenever the IP address changes.  So in your apps you just refer to a name but the DNS server links it to an IP.

    2. You can download the Gateway install file to a server (a Windows Virtual Machine for instance) and install it with the right credentials. On this machine you can also install Power Bi Desktop and publish apps to the workspaces you have. From the clients users can go to the workspaces and the datasets and refresh the data or adjust a schedule to refresh the dataset.
